Broken Links Handler

Project Overview:
The presence of broken links is a serious problem plaguing the World Wide Web. Surveys show that 6% of the links on the web are broken. It reduces the usability of the world web. To deal with this problem, we implemented a web broken links handler check application with Java web interface. It can check the good links and bad ones in a web page. It has the functionality for checking a site, saving the checking result, canceling current check and so on. It differentiates external/internal links, for which internal link sites are recursively checked.

EXISISTING SYSTEM

More and more web users are facing broken link problem. Those the more than 60% of the browsing users have that experience. At least 6% of the links on the web are broken. Broken links reduce the efficiency, annoy browsing users and cause even other more serious problems, for example, the broken links on business WebPages surely influence their profit and reputation, the more, the worse.
PROPOSED SYSTEM
Broken links happen when the resource has been deleted while it is still referenced by other sites, which have no way to know the web has already gone. The other reason is that the resource has changed due to many reasons, for example, the whole system changes to another host name that can comprise more hosts than the original one, or individual web owners change their homepages whenever they like. All of these causes broken links happen. Ideally, Information provider would like to maintain resources that are still being used and discard those that are not (Fixing the “Broken-link” Problem).
The simple idea is that we can establish a referencing system. Resource owners do not move resources unless they have to. If they do so, leave a message on the old location to inform other browsers that the resource has changed and give out the new location, or simpler, link the new location to the old one so users can directly get to the new location by browsing the old location. Another method is to check if there are any broken links in a webpage. By checking WebPages regularly for broken links, one can make some fashionable updating.
Verification
The BLH first reads the user settings and accordingly pipes itself to the destination for verification. Each link, when it finds on its way, will be verified by simply paying a visit to the link location. Content checking is not our primary verification now. Only the existence matters.

Results

Results, both verified as well as broken, will be displayed according to the user settings
Internal
The BLH looks for the similar images, pages within the limits of the given site. The similarity is based on equal names, like names or ‘SOUNDEX’ equivalents.
External
The BLH looks for the similar images, pages externally. This involves careful selection of choices. The programmers have to look into the following issues…
  • Same name but different content
  • Multiple results with the same name
  • Availability of different search engines and their selection for the given broken link
  • Limitations for search
  • Display limitations of search results
